What to see in Assisi: the city of Saint Francis
Assisi stands on the flank of Monte Subasio at an altitude of 424 metres, visible from across the Umbrian Valley. It is the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Clare, and each year receives millions of pilgrims and visitors from every corner of the world. It is just 11 km from Agriturismo Il Barco.
The Basilica of San Francesco
It is the symbol of Assisi and one of the masterpieces of Italian medieval art. The double basilica — lower and upper — was built between 1228 and 1253. The upper basilica contains Giotto's celebrated fresco cycle depicting the Stories of Saint Francis, while the lower church preserves works by Cimabue, Simone Martini and Pietro Lorenzetti.
The historic centre and Piazza del Comune
The civic heart of Assisi is Piazza del Comune, dominated by the Temple of Minerva — a perfectly preserved Roman façade from the 1st century BC, now a church. Around it, the narrow lanes of pink Subasio stone climb towards the Rocca, lined with artisan workshops, restaurants and hidden chapels.
The Basilica of Santa Chiara and the Rocca Maggiore
The Basilica of Santa Chiara holds the body of the saint and the Crucifix of San Damiano that spoke to Francis. The Rocca Maggiore, at the top of the hill, offers a 360° view over the entire Umbrian Valley: on clear days you can see the hills all the way to Tuscany.
The Hermitage of the Carceri
Four kilometres from the centre, deep in the forest of Monte Subasio, the Hermitage of the Carceri is the place where Francis retreated for prayer. A woodland path leads to the caves where the saint meditated. It is one of the most evocative and least crowded spots in Assisi.
