What to see in Bevagna: the timeless medieval village
Bevagna lies in the Umbrian plain, at the foot of the hills separating the Valle del Topino from the Valle del Clitunno. Its historic centre has remained virtually intact since the Middle Ages: not a single palace out of place, not a modern sign in the ancient core. It is 10 km from Agriturismo Il Barco.
Piazza Silvestri
The heart of Bevagna is one of the most beautiful Romanesque squares in Italy. Two twin churches face onto it — San Silvestro (1195) and San Michele Arcangelo (1070) — along with the Palazzo dei Consoli. No cafés, no cars: just stone and silence.
The Romanesque churches
San Silvestro is considered one of the finest examples of Umbrian Romanesque architecture. The grey stone façade is almost austere, but the interior contains a 12th-century crypt of great intensity. San Michele Arcangelo, nearby, has a finely decorated portal with sea monsters — medieval symbols against evil.
The Mercato delle Gaite
Every June, Bevagna is transformed: the four districts (gaite) compete in medieval crafts — papermaking, candle-making, dyeing — faithfully re-enacting life in the 13th century. It is one of the most authentic historical events in Umbria, far removed from tourist spectacle.
The Via Flaminia and Roman mosaics
Under Bevagna, the great Via Flaminia still runs — the ancient Roman road linking Rome to the Adriatic. In the historic centre, a small but precious museum displays the mosaics of 2nd-century Roman baths, discovered beneath the village houses.
